Sunderland fans make Callum Doyle prediction after Man City loanee's debut

Sunderland boss Lee Johnson has described Callum Doyle as an 'outstanding young talent' and he was proved right on Saturday.

Doyle, 17, joined the North East club on loan this summer after making steady progress through Manchester City's youth ranks and, while the youngster was always held in high regard, he's wasted no time making a stellar impression on his competitive Sunderland debut.

The centre-back enjoyed a productive pre-season with Sunderland, but he finally made his professional bow against Wigan in League One on Saturday afternoon and his standout performance helped inspire his side to a 2-1 victory against the visitors.

Wigan's experienced centre-forward Charlie Wyke, who scored 30 goals last season, was kept quiet by Doyle while the City loanee also demonstrated his brilliant range of passing throughout, exuding confidence and composure beyond his years at the back.

Since then, City fans have compared Doyle's display to the style of Aymeric Laporte while Sunderland fans were quick to lavish the praise on the defender, with some supporters making lofty predictions that the youngster will captain England in the future.

The fixtures will come thick and fast for Doyle this season, though, with 46 games played across the League One campaign.
