Sunderland fans are on their way to Wembley today - but there could be some sore heads after a huge pre-match celebration.

Even SAFC owner Stewart Donald joined the crowds and posed for photos with jubilant supporters.

Some of the high spirits spilled over into rowdy behaviour however with a minority of fans setting off flares and jumping into the water fountains.

Former Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe tweeted a photo of a flare appearing to go off in the middle of a Trafalgar Square fountain with gathering fans taking photos of the flash.

He captioned it: "Good luck to Sunderland AFC today! Been a tough few years and you all deserve it!

"Bring that trophy home!"

Supporters were also warned after some became injured during the partying.

The Metropolitan Police Football Unit said they dealt with "a number of injuries in Trafalgar Square" on Saturday night alongside the London Ambulance Service. No arrests were made.

They tweeted: "We want fans to enjoy the night but please go carefully."

It is not known what caused the injuries, but the vast majority of Sunderland fans were praised by the SAFC Policing Team.

Officers who had travelled down to help police the game said: "Everyone having a great time. Come on Sunderland!"

The Checkatrade Trophy final against Portsmouth kicks off at Wembley at 2.30pm - follow live updates here.
