Sunderland fans completely divided over cup progress, while majority predict play-off finish again

It's a fascinating debate. One side of the fence seems to contradict the very nature of a football supporter, yet the other could be seen as ignoring 'the bigger picture'.

'Would you prefer Sunderland to exit the EFL Cup in the next round?'

Over 2,000 supporters answered this burning question in our latest Sunderland AFC survey and results revealed that the fanbase is almost completely divided on the topic.

A slim majority ( 51.6% ) said 'yes', they would prefer Sunderland to lose to Arsenal and exit the Carabou Cup at the quarter final stage.

The club have negotiated four rounds so far, all away from home, against Port Vale, Blackpool, Wigan and QPR. Their reward is an away tie at Arsenal on Tuesday 21 December, but it seems only 48.4% of fans want to see the club progress into the semi finals.

On the topic of cup runs, fans were quizzed on whether Sunderland's progress in the EFL Trophy and Carabou Cup has negatively impacted on league performance.

A very slim majority ( 50.8% ) felt the cup runs hadn't negatively impacted league performance, with 49.2% believing the cups had.

Again, an almost complete divide among the 2,000+ sample size.

Turning attention back towards Sunderland's key priority this season, we asked supporters where they felt the club would finish in League One based on what they had seen so far this season.

Most ( 59.7% ) felt Sunderland would end up in the play-offs again, 22.9% see the club finishing just outside the play-offs, 14.6% feel Sunderland will win the league, while a small minority ( 3.0% ) are forecasting a bottom half finish.
