Sunderland fans call for Anthony Patterson to be given a chance between the sticks

Black Cats fans are calling for Sunderland youngster Anthony Patterson to be given a run in the first team.

Current shot-stoppers Lee Burge and Remi Matthews have come under scrutiny in recent weeks for errors on the pitch.

Most recent, number two Matthews - dropped a howler as Shrewsbury equalised against Sunderland in midweek. It could have been another had the assistant not raised his flag for offside to deny the Shrews a third.

When Lee Johnson arrived on Wearside he said he was looking forward to working with Patterson - who was linked with a loan move to Scottish Premiership side Hamilton Academical in the January transfer window.

The Black Cats youngster has featured just once for the first team - in the EFL Trophy win at Oldham - since Johnson arrived.

But given the struggles of Burge and Matthews - Sunderland fans want to see Patterson given a chance.

Steve Cass said: "If the young lad Patterson can't play league one level then he shouldn't be in the game!

"Get the lad in. Can't be any no worse then the other two."

John Bell pulled no punches as he tweeted: "Patterson [should start] if not Johnson is not fit for purpose."

Aldagadee tweeted: "It’ll be a reflection on the attitude of the club if Patterson isn’t given a chance, even if he’s as bad as the other two, he deserves a go."
