Sunderland fan spotted cleaning at Gigg Lane as football community join forces to help Bury FC

It's D day for Bury FC and Bolton Wanderers as they bid to meet the English Football League's 5pm deadline today.

Both clubs are fighting for their existence and risk expulsion from the Football League if they do not complete a sale by today.

Bolton Wanderers' administrators Paul Appleton revealed the club would be liquidated as early as Wednesday if a deal wasn't agreed, whilst Bury's future still lies in the balance.

There has been a huge effort to prepare Gigg Lane today, in the hope they can complete their first League One fixture of the season, at home to Doncaster Rovers, this weekend.

The club have therefore had to  turn to volunteers to help them prepare their stadium , with basic housekeeping tasks like sweeping the floors and cleaning the seats.

Sortfleet told the Manchester Evening News : "It's been completely overwhelming.

"We obviously expected some people to turn up but we certainly didn't expect 400 people to be there waiting with mops and buckets in their hands.

"It's not just Bury fans either I've spoken to a Sunderland fan, an Ipswich fan, a Leeds fan, even some Bolton fans would you believe.

"So it's been very emotional. There are probably people there cleaning seats which have been cleaned two or three times. We're so thankful."

It's been a football nightmare that has shocked the community right to the very core.

The battle for Bury and Bolton to fight another day rages on, with the clock ticking down to the 5pm deadline.
