Sunderland EFL Trophy fan fundraiser smashes £100,000 mark

Sunderland's EFL Trophy fan fundraiser has smashed through the £100,000 mark this afternoon.

It's an incredible effort from all those involved with the proceeds going to charities across the region.

Lifelong Black Cats fan - Peter Richardson, came up with the idea ahead of Sunderland's Papa John's Trophy tie with Tranmere Rovers next weekend.

With fans unable to attend, the fundraiser was picked up by the supporters group Red and White Army, the Senior Supporters Association and Sunderland AFC Branch Liaison Council - who later joined forces with the club and its official charity, the Foundation of Light.

The original target of £10,000 was smashed inside the first few hours and the fundraiser has gone from strength to strength.

The fundraiser reached the next target of £73,000 - in line with the last time the Black Cats won at Wembley - and have now passed the £100,000 mark.

The proceeds from the campaign will be shared with four charities; the Foundation of Light, Salvation Army, Sunderland Foodbank and Washington Mind as part of the #SunderlandTogether initiative.

Former owner Stewart Donald and Black Cats legend Niall Quinn were among some of the donors from across the world.
