Sunderland duo nominated for September League One awards as Black Cats' strong start continues

Lee Johnson is in the running to win the League One Manager of the Month award for the second successive month.

The Black Cats boss was named Manager of the Month in August after his side won four of their first five league games, to leave them top of the table going into September.

And he has now been nominated for September award after Sunderland remained unbeaten throughout last month, collecting ten points from four league games with three wins and a draw, , and again ending the month at the top of the table.

Johnson has been nominated along with Plymouth's Ryan Lowe and MK Dons' Liam Manning, both of whose sides ended with identical records after collecting 11 points from five unbeaten games, and Wigan's Leam Richardson, whose Latics picked up nine points from four games.

Sunderland's fine start to the season has also been recognised with a nomination in the League One Player of the Month category, where Carl Winchester is among the contenders.

The 28-year-old has made the right-back role his own, but got forward to contribute two goals and an assist in the league last month - form that saw him called up by Northern Ireland, a decade after he won his first and, so far, only senior cap.

Winchester is up against Lincoln winger Anthony Scully, Morecambe striker Cole Stockton, and MK Dons midfielder Scott Twine.
