Sunderland drawn at home against League One opposition in the Carabao Cup first round

Sunderland will face League One newcomers Hull City on Wearside in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The tie, which is due to be played behind-closed-doors at the Stadium of Light on September 5, pits the Black Cats against Grant McCann's Tigers, who were relegated from the Championship last season.

It will also see Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson take on one of his former clubs, having spent six months in charge at the KC Stadium in 2006, while former Black Cats skipper George Honeyman could make his first return to the Stadium of Light since joining the Tigers last summer.

The draw - which was split into northern and southern sections - was conducted by former Arsenal, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, and England man Paul Merson, and was broadcast live on Sky Sports News.

The sides have met only once previously in this competition, when goals from George Herd and Harry Hooper earned Sunderland a 2-1 win in the third round at Roker Park.

Sunderland received a bye in the fourth round that season and were knocked out by Norwich City at the fifth round stage.

The sides last met on Wearside in the Championship in January 2018, when Joel Asoro scored the only goal to give the Black Cats all three points.
