Sunderland discover two of their opponents in this season's EFL Trophy

Sunderland will face Carlisle United and Fleetwood Town in the group stage of the EFL Trophy - with the Black Cats' final group opponents set to be revealed tomorrow.

The Black Cats have been included in Group A of the Northern section of the draw, alongside the League Two Cumbrians and Joey Barton's League One Trawlermen.

Each of the 16 four-team groups - eight in the Northern section and eight in the Southern section - will also include an academy side, and the draw for those final places will be made at 1.30pm tomorrow and broadcast live on radio station Talksport 2.

The eight academy sides that could be drawn in Sunderland's group are Aston Villa, Leeds United, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The first group game of this season's competition has been scheduled for the week beginning September 7 - just days before the League One campaign gets under way on September 12.

Last season Sunderland were knocked out of the competition at the group stage

The previous year the Black Cats reached the final, beating Notts County, Newcastle United U21s, Man City U21s, and Bristol Rovers in the knock-out rounds, before losing to Portsmouth on penalties in the final at Wembley.
