Sunderland discover their opponents in first knockout round of the EFL Trophy

Sunderland will play League Two Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park in the second round of the EFL Trophy.

The tie will be played the week beginning December 7.

Sunderland qualified for the knockout stages of the competition as runners-up in Northern Group A meaning they would be drawn away in the second round against one of the northern region group winners, and Harry Kewell's Latics finished top of Group F having beaten Bradford City, Doncaster Rovers, and Wolverhampton Wanderers in their three group games.

Oldham are currently 20th in League Two, having won one of their seven home league games this season.

It will be Sunderland's first game against Oldham since March 23, 1996, when the sides met in the First Division - now the Championship - at Roker Park, when Martin Scott's goal gave Peter Reid's side a 1-0 win.

And Sunderland's most recent visit to Boundary Park came just 11 days earlier, also in the League, when goals from Michael Gray and Kevin Ball saw the Black Cats win 2-1.

The sides have never previously met in the Trophy, but they have played in both the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Sunderland beat Oldham in the third round of the FA Cup at Roker Park in January 1976, and lost to the Latics at Boundary Park in the first round of same competition in January 1924.

The only meeting between the sides in the League Cup saw Sunderland win 7-1 at Roker Park in the second round of the competition in September 1962.
