Sunderland director gives update on Manchester United plans for Amad amid recall option

Sunderland's sporting director has indicated that he expects Manchester United's Amad to remain on loan at the club for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old Ivorian has been impressive for the Black Cats since joining the Championship side on a season-long loan, with the forward registering six goals and one assists in 20 appearances. After somewhat of a slow start to life at the Stadium of Light, he has scored six times in the last 11 matches.

United have an option to recall Amad, but Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has hinted that the Reds loanee is expected to remain with the Black Cats for the remainder of the season.

Speakman suggested that all parties believe Amad staying with Sunderland is the best course of action given how well the player is developing in the North East.

"Manchester United have an option to recall him up until a certain date, all the feedback that we’ve had from them so far is that they’re delighted with how it’s gone, how we’ve treated him and how he’s performed," he told club media.

"Obviously he’s come off the back of a loan [at Rangers] that I think is generally accepted as having not been as successful. I’m sure Manchester United fully respect the fact that it’s a really good, sweet spot he’s in at the minute. Everything at the minute is fully geared up towards him staying here for the rest of the season."

United manager Erik ten Hag spoke about Amad's situation ahead of the Reds' FA Cup clash with Everton. The Dutchman appeared to suggest that he would not look to recall the attacker unless necessary.

He said: "We consider everything to strengthen the team but I have a little bit of reservation about that because I don't want to stop the process.

"He has made really good progress there so I'm happy with that. But young players need experiences and when we decide for him to come back, he has to be a player who can compete for the starting XI or minimum to come on for a lot of games and make an impact."
