Sunderland dad with terminal cancer completes climb of Scafell Pike in Lake District

A dad-of-three battling a terminal cancer diagnosis has climbed England's tallest mountain to raise money for life-saving research.

Chris Johnson, from Sunderland, climbed Scafell Pike in the Lake District on Monday in aid of Children with Cancer UK, alongside other men also battling the disease.

Sunderland fan Chris had offered to do the climb in a Newcastle United shirt if he reached £3,209 in donations - the height of England's tallest mountain in feet - but he fell just short of that figure.

Despite that, Chris is still delighted with the amount of money he raised - and an appearance on national television helped his campaign.

He said: "On the morning of the climb I appeared on Sky News with Kay Burley, and that gave the fundraiser a bit of a boost!

"From what started out as a bit of fun, I've managed to raise more than £3,000. I've been overwhelmed by the support and everyone's response to it."

Chris, 41, was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer known as a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST) in late 2019. However, he is determined to make the most of his remaining time.

He decided to tackle the imposing Scafell Pike following a visit to the Lake District, having already decided to run both the Great North Run and the London Marathon.

Chris added: "The climb was really good - it was tough, no good way about it, but I really enjoyed climbing it. The weather started out alright - although it was misty and freezing at the top - but it was really good.

"In the end there was me and a friend went over and we met a couple of guys who also have cancer and we went up as a small group.

"I've got to get back to the running now - I've got the Great North Run in four weeks and the London Marathon in seven weeks. I've done quite a lot of training up to now, I just need to do a couple of longer runs - I don't think I'll be breaking any records!

"I probably will climb more - not between now and the Great North Run, but I really enjoyed it. Over the next few weeks when I get bored I'll probably come up with another mad idea."

Chris has now raised more than £11,400 for Children with Cancer UK since he began fundraising. Donations can be made to his campaign here.
