Sunderland Council suspends parking charges across the city to free up space for key workers

Sunderland City Council has suspended all parking charges across the city to free up space for key workers.

The council said the changes would free up parking for those key workers who need to access their workplace and to those people who need to provisions for vulnerable residents.

However, they warned that "inappropriate or inconsiderate" parking may result in the need for enforcement action to be taken.

"We're temporarily suspending parking charges to free up parking provision for those key workers who need to access their workplace and to help those people who need to pick up food and medication for our vulnerable residents and themselves.

"We're doing what we can and need your support. Please park appropriately and considerately in order that we can all access the services that are vital to us all.

"Inappropriate or inconsiderate parking may result in the need for enforcement action to be taken to protect our services.

"It's important to keep areas as clear as possible in accordance with government directions."

On Monday the Prime Minister said people must stay at home unless absolutely necessary and for limited reasons.

The UK death toll rose to 422 on Tuesday.
