Sunderland council promise to reign in the rising cost of funerals

Council bosses have promised to reign in the rising cost of funerals in Sunderland.

A call to keep charges at a 'reasonable level that families in our city can afford' was put to a Wednesday, September 18, meeting of Sunderland City Council.

The plea, which was submitted as part of a formal written question to the council, followed findings in April that cremation costs in Sunderland are among the highest in the North East.

Responding, Coun Debra Waller said: "The council is carrying out a review of bereavement services to ensure we offer the best services to families we can.

"In future years, prices will be limited to general cost of living inflation."

A joint investigation by the BBC and the Cremation Society, a charity, earlier this year found Sunderland and Newcastle had the highest cremation fees in the North East, while Durham had the lowest.
