Sunderland City Council have announced the closure of several popular venues across the city due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The council has made the decision to close Sunderland Museum, Sunderland libraries and the Arts Centre Washington “for the foreseeable future.”

However they said they will continue to review the situation on a weekly basis.

In a statement the council said: “Following careful consideration, Sunderland City Council has taken the difficult decision to close the following venues for the foreseeable future; Sunderland Museum, Arts Centre Washington, Sunderland libraries, Houghton Library, Washington Library and City Library in SMWG.

“We will review the situation on a weekly basis and further updates will be provided..

“We would like to sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your ongoing support and understanding.”

After the government's advice to avoid pubs, clubs and theatres, many businesses and venues across the city have closed down.

In the UK, the number of coronavirus-related deaths has risen to 71.

NHS England said a further 14 people died after the Department of Health revealed on Tuesday that a total of 1,950 people have tested positive for Covid-19.

This follows one further death in Wales and one in Scotland.
