Sunderland confirm upcoming League One clash with Burton Albion has been postponed

Sunderland's upcoming League One clash with Burton Albion has been postponed.

The Black Cats confirmed that the clash scheduled for Saturday, September 7, at the Stadium of Light, had been cancelled after three players were called up for international duty during that period.

Goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin has been called up to the Scotland squad for their European Championship qualifying double-header against Russia and Belgium.

Meanwhile defenders Conor McLaughlin and Tom Flanagan have been called up by Northern Ireland for their fixtures against Luxembourg and Germany next month.

As they hit the threshold of three or more players being called up for international duty, Sunderland had the right to postpone the game and for it to be played at a later date.

The Black Cats have chosen to exercise that option and confirmed in a statement: "Sunderland AFC would like to advise supporters that the upcoming Sky Bet League One game against Burton Albion at the Stadium of Light has been postponed.

"The game falls within a period designated for international fixtures and as three or more players have now been selected for international duty by their respective countries, the club made the request to the EFL to postpone the fixture, which they duly granted.

"The game, which was originally due to take place on Saturday 7 September, will now be re-scheduled, with a new date yet to be confirmed.

"Tickets already purchased will remain valid for the re-arranged fixture."
