Sunderland confirm they won't be signing former Burnley forward after unsuccessful trial

Sunderland will not be signing former Burnley forward Tinashe Chakwana after an unsuccessful trial at the club.

It had been reported earlier this summer that Sunderland were keen on the Zimbabwean forward after he was released by the Clarets.

Sunderland took the 20-year-old forward on trial and viewed him as a potential recruit to their under-23 setup alongside the summer arrivals of Ruben Sammut, Michael Collins and Ahmed Abdelkader.

However, under-23s coach Elliot Dickman has revealed Sunderland have opted against handing him a deal at the Stadium of Light

“He came in and, to be fair, he did great," Dickman told the Sunderland Echo.

“We were pleased but, unfortunately, we’ve decided not to pursue him. But he was a credit to himself and his family.

“When he came in he did smashing, but we just felt he wasn’t the type of player we were really looking for. We’ve got quite similar ones in the building.

“We want to look at different options for that position and to help others develop and improve.

“But he definitely was here and did great, but we didn’t pursue that one.”

Chakwana has also been linked with a move with Championship side Barnsley this summer and is now free to explore other options.
