Sunderland confirm signing of young U23 goalkeeper after a successful trial

Sunderland have completed the signing of young goalkeeper Jack McIntyre following a successful trial spell on Wearside.

The 18-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Black Cats and will work with Elliott Dickman's U23 side.

McIntyre started his career at Manchester City's academy before moving to Everton, but was a free agent after leaving Goodison Park this summer when his contract expired.

He has been training with the Black Cats since July, and had played in the first two Premier League 2 games of the season, with Sunderland losing the season-opener 4-3 at home to Fulham before coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Burnley on Monday.

McIntyre said: "Sunderland is a massive club and I'm delighted to be here.

"The players, staff and everyone around the place have made me feel very welcome and I can’t wait to get going now."

Dickman added: "Jack has been on trial for a number of weeks, and we've been pleased with him.

"He's going to add some quality to our group, and hopefully he'll be in and around the first team in a training role."

The U23s also recruited ex-Manchester United academy goalkeeper Jacob Carney over the summer but the 20-year-old has been out of action recently with a finger injury.

Is Sunderland's squad strong enough to win promotion?
