Sunderland confirm date of their Carabao Cup third round tie at Wigan Athletic

Sunderland have confirmed a date for their Carabao Cup third round tie against Wigan Athletic later this month.

The Black Cats will take on the Latics at the DW Stadium on Tuesday, September 21, with kick-off at 7.45pm.

Ticketing information for the tie will be released in the coming days.

A goal from Josh Hawkes and a penalty converted by Aiden O'Brien saw Lee Johnson's side beat League Two Port Vale 2-1 at Vale Park in the first round of the competition.

And then in the second round, O'Brien scored a hat-trick as Sunderland beat Championship outfit Blackpool 3-2 at Bloomfield Road.

Wigan beat Championship side Hull City on penalties in the first round, and also triumphed on penalties against fellow League One side Bolton Wanderers in the second round of the competition.

Sunderland and Wigan have already met once this season, with an Aiden McGeady penalty and a goal from Ross Stewart enough to earn the Black Cats a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the League One season.

Wigan signed a trio of former Sunderland players over the summer with last season's 31-goal top scorer Charlie Wyke and midfielder Max Power leaving Wearside at the end of their contracts, and joining the Latics.

The third former Sunderland man to join Wigan was winger Jordan Jones, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Black Cats from Rangers.
