Sunderland coach suffers double leg-break playing in staff football match

Sunderland U23 coach Elliott Dickman is recovering after suffering a double leg-break while playing in a staff football match.

Dickman is understood to have broken his tibula and fibula after an accidental collision with a member of staff during the game on Friday.

The 42-year-old has had his leg put in a plaster cast but was at the Academy of Light on Monday to watch the U23s Premier League 2 fixture against West Brom, albeit he was not in the dugout.

Sunderland's coaching staff and and members of the administrative team have held informal matches on a weekly basis for many years.

Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and head coach Lee Johnson are among those believed to have been playing in the game on Friday.
