Sunderland 'closing in' on Manchester United goalkeeper as first summer signing

Sunderland are close to their first signing of the summer, according to reports.

Alan Nixon of The Sun, claims the Black Cats have won the race to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Jacob Carney.

The 20-year-old is set to become a free agent when his contract at Old Trafford expires this summer.

Sunderland are in the market for another goalkeeper after allowing Remi Matthews to leave the Stadium of Light - leaving just Lee Burge and Anthony Patterson as their two senior goalkeepers.

The Sun on Sunday recently reported that the Black Cats had offered Carney a deal ahead of the window opening, but faced competition from Burnley and Brighton for his signature.

However, the latest news report claims Sunderland have won the race for his signature, beating off the two Premier League sides.

His signing would be a further statement of intent from Kyril Louis-Dreyfus who promised to invest into the academy set-up at the Stadium of Light.

It's believed that Carney would go into the Sunderland Under-23's side which narrowly missed out on promotion from PL2.

The Black Cats remain intent on creating a pathway for youngsters to the first team.
