Sunderland make second summer signing as goalkeeper Lee Burge joins on a free

Sunderland have sealed their second summer signing, with goalkeeper Lee Burge completing his move.

The Black Cats completed a deal that saw Conor McLaughlin join on a free transfer on Monday, and Burge has now followed.

He's signed a two-year contract at the Stadium of Light having been released by Coventry this summer.

Burge will provide much-needed cover to number one Jon McLaughlin who was the only senior shot-stopper on the books of Sunderland after Robbin Ruiter and Max Stryjek were released.

McLaughlin himself has been linked with moves to Millwall and Middlesbrough, but owner Stewart Donald was adamant he was not for sale.

But Sunderland's need for a new goalkeeper was on full show on day one of pre-season when no goalkeepers were part of the squad. McLaughlin has been given a slightly extended break because of his involvement with Scotland earlier in the summer.

Burge said: “This is a club that can offer me everything I want, and the stature of the club is incredible.

“As a player, you want to train at the best facilities and play in the best stadiums, and this is by far the best place I have experienced.

“I just can’t wait to get going.”

SAFC manager, Jack Ross, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Lee to Sunderland AFC.

“It was an area we were looking to strengthen, and as you can see from his record, he boasts a wealth of experience within the Football League.

“Throughout the last 12 months we have worked hard to bring the right type of players to the club, and I’m sure Lee will fit seamlessly into the group.”

Burge, 26, will provide cover to the Scotland international and has been first choice at Coventry for the past two seasons. In total he's made 100 appearances in League One and kept 22 clean sheets in those games.

But he was allowed to leave the Midlands side this summer with Marko Marosi and former Sunderland academy product Ben Wilson joining them.

Burge came through the academy ranks with the Sky Blues and the only other side he's played for is Nuneaton during a loan spell there in 2013.
