Sunderland City Council announce 20-year partnership with BAI Communications, bringing 5G to the city

Sunderland City Council this morning announced a new 20-year partnership deal with BAI Communications, with plans to launch a next generation digital foundation across the city.

The newly built infrastructure will include a private small cell 5G network, which will provide a second-to-none connection which local businesses can use to grow.

The initial stage of network renovation is set to be in place by the summer of 2022, and will see a baseline of connectivity across the city for occupants to make the most of.

Not only will local businesses be able to use the network innovatively, but over 100 jobs will also be created through the process - as technicians and operators will be needed to maintain it.

The Council also hope that the transformation will bring both social and economical benefits not only to the people of Wearside, but also the North East on the whole and visitors alike.

Patrick Melia, Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council, said: "This is an incredibly significant milestone in the development and future of Sunderland: Our Smart City."

He continued: "We are very much looking forward to our 20-year strategic partnership with BAI, as its team helps us realise our ambitions and make our goals a reality.

"We are confident the benefits of this partnership will reach every resident, organisation and business within our city and indeed the wider area."

The 5G network will allow faster online server times throughout Sunderland and will be accompanied by complimenting next-gen technology allowing the city to deliver 'transformative digital services'.

This project will allow businesses to be a part of further Industry 4.0 benefits, increasing supply chain speeds through trials of self-driving vehicles. In turn, this will hopefully increase both the speed and safety of good transit between Nissan's supply chain and their car manufacturing plant in Washington.

Better remote learning is another area that the Council wish to improve through the implementation of 5G. As the Covid-19 pandemic changed how many receive education, better connectivity and support remotely is a primary focus.

After a successful trial at Hudson Road Primary School, Hendon, Sunderland City Council now strive to ensure that young people have the education they need delivered remotely.

Social care is also said to be impacted positively by the capacity and reach of the new technology. Packages will have potential to assist the vulnerable in their homes, using sensors and wireless signals to alert carers and authorities faster should assistance be needed.

CEO of BAI UK Billy D'Arcy said: "Our long-term strategic partnership with Sunderland City Council will completely transform the city, accelerating Sunderland's ambitions to become one of the UK's most advanced smart cities, connecting people, communities and businesses.

He added: "We will leverage the power of 5G and the Internet to establish a network of connectivity which will enhance employment opportunities, business efficiency and growth, helping to secure its prosperous future."

"Our extensive credentials delivering large-scale connected infrastructure and networking solutions position us perfectly to capitalise on the fast-growing commercial appeal of 5G enterprise solutions and smart city applications."

BAI Communications is a world leader in shared communications infrastructure, who have a track record of accelerating and amplifying networks for their customers and clients in cost effective manners.

Coupled up with Sunderland's 'Smart City' plan over the coming years, the pair plan to create city-wide improvements that the generations to come can enjoy.
