Sunderland car parts firm, Unipres, wins planning bid to expand base

A city car parts firm is set to boost production after winning planning permission to extend its base.

Washington-based manufacturer, Unipres UK Ltd, applied to Sunderland City Council to build two extensions to its existing press and assembly shop.

The original building has been extended a number of times to "keep abreast with the continued expansion of Nissan", a planning report states.

New plans - which cover a 11.2 hectare site - aim to allow the firm to "house additional production capacity."

Sunderland City Council's area development control sub-committee nodded through the plans this week.

During consultation, Highways England said the plans could have a "cumulative impact at the A19/A690 Doxford Park junction" in terms of traffic.

As a result, a condition was added that requires planned road improvements to be completed before the new buildings are occupied.

The condition reads: "No development shall be brought into use until the scheme of highway improvements to widen a section of the A1290 has been completed to the satisfaction of the local highway authority and Highways England."
