Sunderland by night: Our photographers see Wearside in a different light

Sunderland, while a bustling city during the day, takes on a whole new look by night.

Take a look at some of our photos of the beautiful city basking in lights.

From the green glow of the Wearmouth Bridge welcoming visitors into the city with stunning reflections on the river below, to the multi-million-pound Keel Square.

Water features at the £3m development offered a changing spectrum of light with the variable jets and lights, offering a host of different effects.

The centrepiece is ‘Propellers of the City’, a sculpture dedicated to the shipbuilding heritage of the area.

The bronze wheel reads “Workers of the Wear, builders of the ships” and the inside lights up and can be operated by a remote, smaller wheel.

We’ve also chosen to show off some stunning pictures of Sunderland during previous Illuminations Festivals.

The festival features lighting installations throughout the city and runs for just over a month.

Previous themes have included Alice in Wonderland theme, which brought an exciting carnival atmosphere to Sunderland.

There were costumes, live performances and incredible installations to excite the youngest and oldest visitors.
