Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson confirms interest in Bristol City striker

Sunderland are monitoring Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo, Phil Parkinson has confirmed.

The Black Cats boss is desperate to add some firepower to his squad in the January transfer window and the 19-year-old is a possible loan target.

Semenyo scored six times while on loan at Newport County last season but has yet to score his first goal for City.

Parkinson said: “He is a player we have looked at.

“He has pace and power, and he’s someone we have been monitoring.”

While Semenyo is one name under consideration, Parkinson and the club’s head of recruitment Tony Coton are understood to have drawn up a long list of possible targets.

Parkinson also revealed that former Sunderland goalkeeper Ben Alnwick has been training with the Black Cats after leaving Bolton Wanderers this week, although it seems unlikely that he will be signing for the club where he began his career.

Parkinson said: “Ben has just been coming in and doing a bit of training with [goalkeeping coach] Lee Butler.

“He’s settled his contract at Bolton, he lives locally, I know him, and it never hurts to have another keeper on the training ground.

“We have two very good goalkeepers already in Jon McLaughlin and Lee Burge, along with young Patto [Anthony Patterson], so we have other priorities in the January window.”
