Sunderland-born manager favourite to become Mansfield Town manager ahead of FA Cup clash

Sunderland-born Nigel Clough is the favourite to take the reigns at Mansfield Town, as they prepare to take on the Black Cats in this weekend's FA Cup first-round clash.

The Stags are currently without a manager after Graham Coughlan was given the boot.

Mansfield are yet to win a game this season and are 22nd in League Two after seven draws from 11 games.

Clough has been without a club since the end of last season after leaving Sunderland's League One rivals Burton Albion, as the Brewers suffered financially due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Son of Sunderland legend Brian, Clough enjoyed two spells in charge of the Brewers, leading them into the Championship for the first time in their history.

It's no surprise that Clough is on the Stags managerial radar given his promotion credentials and Mansfield's desperate ambition to get out League Two.

It's expected that he'll be announced as the new manager prior to the FA Cup on Saturday.
