Sunderland-born football star Jordan Henderson receives an MBE for charity work during pandemic

He helped to raise millions of pounds for the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic - and now football star Jordan Henderson is being honoured for his efforts.

The Sunderland-born player has been made an MBE in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to football and charity, particularly during the Covid crisis.

The Liverpool captain raised £4m for the NHS from fellow Premier League footballers through the #PlayersTogether appeal.

He was instrumental in setting up the initiative where a host of top flight players donated money to provide financial assistance to the NHS during the pandemic.

Then in January this year, Jordan was appointed official Champion of NHS Charities Together.

At the time, he said: “This is a massive honour for me.

"As part of being involved with NHS Charities Together I’ve got to hear first-hand from NHS staff about the challenges they face and how donations are making a such a difference to them.

"I am delighted to be the charity’s official champion and I’ll do what I can to shine a light on the amazing work NHS charities do to support the NHS."

And Ellie Orton, CEO of NHS Charities Together, said: "Getting to know Jordan and his passion for the NHS over the past few months has been fantastic.

"He’s already done so much through #PlayersTogether and we’re so thrilled to welcome him on board as our official champion.

"He’s such a fantastic role model and we thank him so much for choosing to share his platform with us."

Jordan joined Sunderland's youth system aged eight and signed a professional contract with the club in July 2008 before making his league debut appearance in November that same year.

He eventually made the first team and was named Sunderland's Young Player of the Year for the second season running in 2011 before eventually joining Liverpool FC.

Post congratulations messages to Jordan in the comments below.
