Sunderland beat Premier League clubs to sign highly sought-after teenager

Sunderland have signed former Peterborough academy winger Nicky Gyimah, with the teenager joining the club's U23 side.

The 18-year-old has spent a spell at the Academy of Light on trial and has impressed U23 coaches Mike Dodds and Michael Proctor sufficiently to earn a contract for the remainder of the season with the Black Cats having the option of extending his stay for a further year.

"Signing for Sunderland is a massive moment for myself and my family, of course," Gyimah told the club's official website.

"I would like to think I can bring pace, directness and leadership to the side.

"When I got the opportunity to come here, I definitely felt that having trained and kept myself fit over the past few months, I am now fully ready to get straight into action.

"I'm hugely thankful for the opportunity and the faith shown in me, and I'm looking forward to getting started here."

Gyimah had spent time training with Middlesbrough earlier this season, and had reportedly also attracted interest from as many as eight Premier League clubs as well as German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

The London-born forward is also understood to have been contacted by Ghana with a view to representing them on the international stage.
