Sunderland away support beaten by only one club as Black Cats following eclipses whole of Championship

Sunderland have the second highest average away support across all of League One this season with 2,343. The Black Cats are beaten only by Sheffield Wednesday, who average just over 100 more on their travels with 2,464.

Perhaps what makes Sunderland’s total more impressive, though, is the fact they average more away supporters than any club in the Championship. Northeast neighbours Middlesbrough have the highest total in the second tier with 2,260, with Sunderland’s fans again showing they deserve to be in a division higher than what they are currently playing in.

And the level of Sunderland’s support is once again going to be on show when they make the long journey down south to Wembley for the League One play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers. The Black Cats were given an extra 6,480 tickets on top of their initial allocation of 37,480, which is already close to selling out.

Sunderland will be hoping to reward supporters for the excellent loyalty they have shown in recent years – with this now their fourth attempt at promotion back to the Championship. But in that time, the support has never dwindled and there is now just one hurdle remaining to overcome.

And while it is Wednesday who boast the best away following in the division, it was Sunderland who came out on top in their heavyweight semi-final battle, winning 2-1 on aggregate. And they will be facing Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe at Wembley, who defied the odds by beating MK Dons by the same scoreline as they seek an immediate return to the Championship.
