Sunderland appoint new club secretary to replace Brett Baker

Sunderland have appointed Ray Murphy as the Black Cats’ new club secretary following the departure of Brett Baker.

Murphy joined Sunderland last month from Swindon Town, who were promoted to League One last season.

He had been club secretary at Swindon since 2017 and before that he spent 12 years at Eastleigh where he worked for Stewart Donald, who sold the Spitfires in 2018 in order to buy Sunderland.

The pair have been reunited on Wearside, and Murphy will also link up again with Sunderland's head of football operations Richard Hill who is a former Eastleigh manager.

Sunderland chief executive Jim Rodwell confirmed: "We've got a new club secretary, Ray Murphy, who has been with us for a few weeks.

"He's come in from Swindon.

"I've yet to meet him – other than a thousand Zoom calls! – but he has been cracking on with what needs to be done.

"Brett Baker has gone to Brighton but before he left there was a considerable handover period."

Murphy will take over the role vacated when Baker left Sunderland last month to become club secretary at Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion.

Murphy will be responsible for all football administration issues, a brief that includes dealing with the FA and EFL over disciplinary matters, registration of players, and making travel plans and arrangements for Phil Parkinson's first-team squad

Baker had been club secretary at Sunderland since 2016, with that role rebranded as head of football administration when Donald took over.
