Sunderland and Burton Albion fined by the FA following their on-field scuffle

Sunderland and Burton Albion have been fined after pleading guilty to an FA charge arising from an on-field scuffle at the Pirelli Stadium last month.

The clubs were charged last week with a breach of Rule E20 - failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion - after a clash between Sunderland's Aiden O'Brien and Burton's Hayden Carter escalated into a melee involving players from both sides.

O'Brien was bundled over the advertising hoardings by Josh Earl, with the Burton defender sent off for a second bookable offence as a result.

Sunderland received the standard penalty for the offence which is a £2,500 fine, but Burton's trangression was deemed too serious for the standard penalty and following a hearing in which written evidence was considered, they were fined £3,500.

The incident came 10 minutes into the second half when Sunderland were already leading 2-0 through goals from Grant Leadbitter and Lynden Gooch.

O'Brien was booked for his part in the initial clash with Carter, although the Burton man escaped a card.

Earl's red card left Burton to play out the final 35 minutes with ten men, and Sunderland made the extra man count with Charlie Wyke adding a third goal 15 minutes from time.
