Sunderland allow young defender to join National League North Darlington on loan

Young Sunderland defender Nathan Newall has joined National League North side Darlington on loan for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old left-back is expected to go straight into the Quakers' squad for this tomorrow's game against Spennymoor Town at Blackwell Meadows.

Left-back Newall joined Sunderland from Guiseley in the summer of 2021 and has made 29 appearances for the club at U23 and U21 level. He has yet to make a first team appearance for the Black Cats, although he was included on the bench for the club's EFL Trophy game at Lincoln City in October 2021.

Darlington boss Alun Armstrong said: "We've been in the market for a left-back for a while and we got his details sent through. "The kid has a history of playing men's football with Guiseley, before Sunderland brought him in in 2021 and he has done exceptionally well.

"They want him out on loan playing men's football so we enquired. There were a few other clubs interested in him, league clubs, and we have been fortunate enough to get him and hopefully he will give us that balance on that left side and that competition for places as well.

"I vaguely remember him [at Guiseley] - a little tough lad who was quite quick, and he likes to get forward as well, which suits us. We lack that bit of pace at times, so hopefully this will help us."
