Sunderland Airshow cancelled for second year running due to Covid-19 pandemic

This summer's Sunderland International Airshow has been cancelled for the second year running as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bosses at Sunderland City Council have confirmed the annual showpiece event has been grounded again highlighting that the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors is "paramount".

The Airshow, which brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city each year, was due to take place between July 23-25.

The eagerly anticipated event was called off last year for the first time in 32 years following the outbreak of Covid-19.

Last year the city council’s ruling cabinet offered a 'guarantee' it would be back in Wearside’s calendar in time for 2021.

But organisers have now confirmed that the Airshow will not take place this summer as the city continues its recovery from the coronavirus crisis.

Fiona Brown, executive director of neighbourhoods, said: "Following careful consideration, we have taken the decision to cancel Sunderland Airshow this year.

"We understand that this news will be disappointing, not only for visitors but for everyone who works to make Sunderland Airshow a success.

"The safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors is paramount and we must continue to do everything we can to support the coronavirus recovery in the city.

"We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our award winning seafront in 2022."

It is estimated about 400,000 turned out for the 2019 edition of the Airshow, pumping more than £5 million into the Wearside economy.
