Sunderland aiming to bring in more new faces early next week

Phil Parkinson wants to bring in a couple of new signings early next week as Sunderland gear up for a busy seven days.

The Black Cats are looking to strengthen the squad before next Friday’s transfer deadline and, with a trip to Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday and then a long journey to Portsmouth at the weekend, Parkinson hopes to complete his transfer business as quickly as possible.

“We’re working towards a couple more additions and if we get the ones we want, great - if not, we will stick with what we’ve got,” said Parkinson following his side’s goalless draw against Doncaster Rovers.

“Dialogue has kept on going between ourselves and a few clubs.

“Ideally we would get deals done early next week because we will be travelling at the end of the week down to Portsmouth.

“We have been working on it this morning and we will see where the next couple of days takes us.”

Sunderland have already brought in two players this month with Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty joining on a short-term deal until the end of the season, while Bristol City centre-back Bailey Wright joined this week on loan.

But Parkinson is still looking to sign a midfielder, a forward, and possibly a defender as specialist cover for left wingback Denver Hume.

Burton Albion frontman Liam Boyce has been linked with Sunderland during the transfer window but the arrival of Lafferty means the Black Cats now have plenty of cover in that central striker position.

Asked about Boyce, Parkinson said: “We’ve got Charlie Wyke, Kyle Lafferty, and Will Grigg in that number nine role and Marc McNulty can play there as well, so as much as we want cover and options, too many players would give us problems.”
