Sunderland 'agree deal' for Forest Green captain Carl Winchester

Sunderland have agreed a deal to bring Forest Green midfielder Carl Winchester to the Stadium of Light according to reports.

Football Insider claims that Lee Johnson's side have had a bid accepted by the League Two outfit for the 27-year-old and is set to become his signing.

A source at the club has reportedly told Football Insider that the terms have been agreed and the signing will be announced soon.

Freelancer Pete O'Rourke also claimed that a deal had been agreed. The fee is to be undisclosed but with six months left on the Northern Irishman's contract at the New Lawn, it's not expected to be a large sum.

The signing will reunite Johnson with a player who he managed during his two-year spell at Oldham.

Winchester is known for his versatility and can operate in central midfield, right wing and even at right back.

A string of impressive performances last season saw Forest Green manager, Mark Cooper, tip him for a move away from the New Lawn

Speaking ahead of Rovers trip to Oldham last season, Cooper said: “He’s a Championship player and if I was a Championship manager, he’d be one of the first players I would take."
