Sunderland AFC transfer gossip - Manchester United and Blackburn midfielders linked; PL interest in defender

With just five days until the January transfer window slams shut, Sunderland are still in the market for new players.

There is also the chance for some departures from the Stadium of Light, as Phil Parkinson looks to mould a squad capable of winning promotion to the Championship.

Here is all the transfer gossip surrounding Sunderland AFC.

Incomings

Richie Smallwood

Sunderland are one of a number of clubs credited with interest in Blackburn midfield Richie Smallwood, according to our sister side Lancashire Live.

The 29-year-old former Middlesbrough player has found his game time at Ewood Park limited this term, with just two appearances in the Carabao Cup.

Despite that, Sunderland are said to be one of a number of clubs interested in the central midfielder, with Championship clubs Charlton, Wigan, Barnsley and Huddersfield all mentioned, as too are League Two side Bradford City.

Smallwood is out of contract at the end of the season and seemingly has no future at Blackburn.

The Sunday People report that Manchester United are prepared to allow the young midfielder to leave on loan for the rest of the season and Sunderland are leading the race.

The Black Cats are in the market for a new midfielder this month with the likes of Rangers' Greg Docherty, Shrewsbury's Ollie Norburn and Cardiff's Will Vaulks all linked with the club in recent weeks.

The 18-year-old has made seven first team appearances for the Red Devils and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has dubbed him the 'next Michael Carrick'.

Outgoings

Jon McLaughlin

Reported interest in the Sunderland goalkeeper from Blackburn won't go away but the Sun on Sunday report McLaughlin has no plans of leaving the Stadium of Light this month.

The 32-year-old Scotland international will now see out the rest of the season with his Black Cats contract due to expire in the summer.

The report claims McLaughlin believes he will get a better salary package as a free agent, whether he renews his deal at Sunderland or decides to join Blackburn instead.

Brandon Taylor

The 20-year-old defender is reportedly subject of interest from four Premier League clubs.

According to Team Talk, Leicester, Everton, Bournemouth and Southampton have watched the Black Cats youngster and are considering making a move.

Taylor has made just two appearances for Sunderland this season and is out of contract in the summer.

Logan Pye

It has been reported this week that the 16-year-old defender will join Manchester United and the Sun on Sunday claim the Red Devils will offer him a five year contract.

Arsenal had also been interested in the England youth international but his future looks set to lie in Manchester.

Jack Bainbridge

The Sunderland under-23s defender, who has made three first team appearances, has hinted he would like a loan move away from Wearside this month.

He told the Sunderland Echo: “I’m at an age now where I need to play first-team football, so I would be interested in a loan if I can’t get first-team football here.

“The short-term is that I just want to win games with the under-23s and get us enjoying football,” he continued.

“But in the long-term, maybe I can push for first-team football here - or if not, maybe I can go out on loan and go somewhere else to play first-team football.

“I just want to enjoy my football and have a good career, really.”
