Sunderland AFC 'promotion party' put on ice after League One play-off final heartbreak

Sunderland AFC beamed a 'promotion party' advert on a big screen - before losing the League One play-off final.

The Black Cats planned on staging a bash at the Stadium of Light but Charlton Athletic turned out to be party poopers, with their injury time Wembley winner ending Sunderland's promotion hopes.

Manager Jack Ross was due to attend, along with his full squad, including stars such as Will Grigg and Aiden McGeady.

But after their 2-1 defeat, the free Bank Holiday Monday event - planned for between 4-8pm - will no longer go ahead.

The advert is understood to have been briefly screened in error, with the club making plans in the event of a positive scoreline in the capital.

Tens of thousands of Sunderland fans visited Wembley for what would prove to be the club's second unsuccessful trip this season.

They previously suffered Checkatrade Trophy final heartache , losing to Portsmouth in a penalty shoot-out.

And on Sunday they lost again, with Patrick Bauer's 94th-minute winner sending Charlton to the Championship.

“We were here not so long ago and we lost in a really sore manner but it doesn’t compare to today,” said Jack Ross after the defeat.

“We knew the significance of the game today and the importance of coming out on the right side of the result, so to lose in that manner was particularly painful.

“If you were down at pitchside you would see how hurt they [the players] are, how disappointed they are - it’s gut-wrenching for them, that’s the only way to describe the feeling in the pit of their stomachs."
