Cattermole runs the game, Flanagan solid, Morgan a threat - Sunderland player ratings

Sunderland look destined for the drama of the play-offs following their 1-1 draw with Portsmouth.

Even though the Black Cats have only lost three times in League One all season, it looks as though too many draws are going to cost them an automatic promotion spot.

They can now only draw level with top two Luton and Barnsley if they win their remaining two games - at Fleetwood and Southend - while at least one of the joint leaders must lose on the final day. Even then, goal difference is likely to mean Sunderland will miss out.

The Black Cats got off to the perfect start when defender Tom Flanagan , reinstated to the team at the expense of Jimmy Dunne, headed home at the back post from Max Power's free-kick to put the hosts ahead.

But Portsmouth were back level within 15 minutes. Wembley tormentor Jamal Lowe tapping in after Lee Brown headed against the bar.

At that point the game was held up for four minutes after a Portsmouth fan threw a flare from the upper north stand down in the Sunderland fans below.

Max Power saw a second-half shot brilliantly saved, and while it was the Black Cats doing all the pressing, not even the introduction of Chris Maguire and Will Grigg helped the home side find a winner.

But how did the Sunderland players perform? Here's James Hunter's match ratings.

JON McLAUGHLIN 7

Couple of decent saves and no chance with the goal

LUKE O'NIEN 6

Good all-round performance but limped off near the end

ALIM OZTURK 6

Did OK but not as great an attacking threat as in recent games

Ran the game from central midfield and his passing was crisp and clean

MAX POWER 7

Free-kick led to the goal and he also brought a good save out of the keeper

LEWIS MORGAN 7

Caused Pompey real problems and hit the woodwork with an overhead kick

GEORGE HONEYMAN 6

Worked hard and covered a lot of ground

AIDEN McGEADY 7

Always a threat, and Pompey had to resort to fouling him

CHARLIE WYKE 7

Brought a brilliant save out of MacGillivray just before half-time
