Sunday transfer gossip: Newcastle United linked with summer move for Manchester United defender

Newcastle United are planning to throw Manchester United defender Phil Jones a Premier League lifeline this summer.

That is according to the Mirror, who report the Red Devils will listen to offers of £12million for the England international centre-half.

The 28-year-old has been restricted to just eight appearances this term with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferring Harry Maguire, Victor Linedelof and Eric Bailly at the heart of defence.

Young defender Axel Tuanzebe is highly rated at Old Trafford, while Chris Smalling has impressed on loan at Roma this season.

It means Jones' future in the North West is uncertain and he is keen for first team football as he looks to get back into the England squad.

Jones was part of Gareth Southgate's 2018 World Cup squad but has not won a cap since the third place play-off against Belgium.

The report claims Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is a 'huge admirer' of Jones, who Sir Alex Ferguson signed for £16million from Blackburn in 2011 as a 19-year-old.

However, West Ham United manager David Moyes is also an admirer and the Hammers could contest any move.

Newcastle are well stocked in the centre-half department and have six players in the position who have all impressed in the last couple of seasons.

Federico Fernandez penned a new deal at the club earlier this week, while Newcastle also have Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune on their books.
