Sunday Times Rich List includes two NI business owners

Two people from Northern Ireland have been named among the wealthiest people in the UK, according to a new Sunday Times Rich List.

Owner of pharmaceutical company Norbrook and solicitor, Mary Haughey (Lady Ballyedmond) features prominently in the latest rich list published today.

She is ranked as the 135th richest person in the United Kingdom, standing with an overall wealth of £1.247bn

However, while Lady Ballyedmond and family were named the richest family in Northern Ireland, their wealth decreased by £98m within the last 2 months.

The Newry -headquartered veterinary pharmaceutical firm founded by her late husband, Eddie, in 1969.

The Northern Irish manufacturer is one of the largest family-owned veterinary medicine companies in the world, making treatments for cats, dogs, rabbits, cattle, horses, pigs and poultry.

According to the Sunday Times, Norbrook has struggled with supply chain and manufacturing problems for the past two years.

Profits halved to £4.2 million on lower turnover of £211.7 million in 2019-20. The size of the workforce was cut by nearly 100 to 1,883 during the same period.

Meanwhile, Co Louth-born and owner of Irish based consumer electrical goods firm GlenDimplex, Martin Naughton is also on the list and recorded as the second richest man in Northern Ireland.

Mr Naughton started Glen Electric in 1973 with a small manufacturing facility employing just ten people in Newry, Co Down.

In 1977, Dimplex, the leading brand in the UK electrical heating market was acquired by Glen Electrics forming the Glen Dimplex Group.

According to the latest rich list, the 82-year-old lost his billionaire status within the last year, losing £300m during the pandemic.

He now sits with a combined wealth of £858m.
