Sunday Times best places to live in the UK 2022 includes Glasgow favourite Shawlands

Shawlands has been named as one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times.

The prestigious Best Places to Live 2022 Scotland guide, which was released today, places the area in the south side of Glasgow fifth on its list.

The Sunday Times said it was looking at schools, transport, broadband, culture, green spaces and the health of the high street when picking this year's winners.

On Shawlands, judges described the south side area as "both practical and cool”.

They particularly admired the area’s closeness to Pollok Park and the reopened Burrell Collection.

And they were impressed with the wide variety of coffee shops and cafes that have helped nudge the area towards regeneration.

A statement contained in the guide states: "The Southside’s premium coffee and cake quarter is both practical and cool – and perfectly placed to take advantage of Pollok Country Park, and the Burrell Collection."

The Isle of Bute in Argyll scooped the top place in Scotland for this year's guide with Braemar in Aberdeenshire and Culross in Fife taking second and third place.

Dunblane and Shawlands rounded up the top five, with Ilkley in West Yorkshire listed as the overall winner for the UK.

Helen Davies, The Sunday Times property editor, said: "“Ten years ago, when we launched the inaugural list, London’s gravitational pull was strong, the WFH revolution had not yet reached our doorstep and high streets were stacked with chains. How times have changed — and how welcome that change is.

“This year we have discovered new best places to live, from resurgent city centres in the north, rejuvenated suburbs across the country, hidden villages in the southwest, and a commutable Scottish island.

“We hope there is something to suit everyone.”
