Sunday Times Best Places to Live: Dennistoun and Bearsden make the top eight for Scotland

The Sunday Times have released their best places to live in Scotland today - and of course Glasgow has made the list!

The Sunday Times Best Places to Live is a list of eight locations across Scotland chosen by The Sunday Times to represent the best of Britain in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

Dennistoun and Bearsden both were namechecked in the infamous list, made up of the top eight 'best' places to live in Scotland.

This comes as no surprise, as last year Time Out magazine declared Dennistoun the eighth-coolest neighbourhood in the world.

It was described as a "secluded island" just out of Glasgow City centre.

This year's winner for the whole of Scotland was North Berwick.

In a year where our homes have become so important to us - as for many of us it's become the office as well as our sanctuary and where we rest our weary heads - making this year's list is all the more impressive.

Expert judges behind the guide assess a wide range of factors, from schools, air quality, transport and broadband speeds to culture, green spaces and the health of the high street.

They look for improving towns, villages or city centres, for attractive, well designed homes and locations bursting with community spirit – which the pandemic has shown to be the most vital quality of all.

Here's what the judges had to say about the best places to live in Glasgow.

Bearsden

The judges said Glasgow’s premier suburb of Bearden has shown it has more strings to its bow than big houses, good exam results and 20-minute train journey to the city centre. The surrounding countryside has been a godsend during lockdown, whether it’s walking the dog in the Kilpatrick Hills or riding a bike around picturesque Kilmardinny Loch.

Average house price: £272,500

Average rental: £895 pcm

Dennistoun

The judges said this up-and-coming corner of the East End combines a youthful edge with a respect for Glasgow tradition. Alexandra Park is the beating heart of the area, meeting place for a menagerie of dogs and their walkers, with a wild stretch where you can feel as if you’re not in the city at all (as long as you can ignore the hum of cars on the M8 Motorway). Dennistoun’s cultural cachet exploded last year when Time Out magazine declared it the eighth-coolest neighbourhood in the world.

Average house price: £147,000

Average rental: £750 pcm

Helen Davies, The Times and Sunday Times Property Editor, said: “This guide has never been so important. The pandemic has taught us just how much we rely on our homes, our communities and our surroundings. With working from home now common, it’s no surprise that many of us are reassessing our priorities and thinking hard about where we really want to live.

“Our focus for this year has been community, countryside and convenience. It hasn’t been a year for big cities or small villages. Instead it is small towns that have shone: big enough to have everything you need within walking distance and small enough for everyone to feel connected.

“North Berwick is our winner in Scotland because it is one place that really does have it all: heavenly beaches, jaw-dropping views from North Berwick Law, a successful secondary school and a lively high street.”

The comprehensive guide is released online today and will be available in the paper on Sunday.
