Sunday Sessions at Powderham Castle: Noel Gallagher still flying high on first return to Exeter since Britpop

It was worth the 20 year wait.

Two decades after Noel Gallagher came roaring into Exeter with Oasis at the height of Britpop he was back, albeit a tad mellower.

This time it wasn’t a full to capacity, sweaty Westpoint he was rocking but the extremely grand manor house, Powderham Castle - on a chilled out Sunday.

And he was minus brother Liam and the rest of that gang, hitting the inaugural Sunday Sessions with his High Flying Birds.

Noel’s crew brought the curtain down on a wonderful day in the Devon sunshine, playing a string of their hits including Holy Mountain, If I Had A Gun, AKA… What A Life! and In The Heat of the Moment. Who needed Cigarettes and Alcohol and Champagne Supernova!

Iconic indie band The Charlatans added to the day’s ‘Madchester’ theme earlier with sing-a-long classics including North Country Boy, One to Another and the huge The Only One I Know.

Sheffield indie legends Reverend and The Makers, The Blinders and The Loft Club - a local act - got the party started with gusto.

And while the parents soaked up the sun and tunes there was plenty to keep the kids entertained, including circus workshops, face painting and a funfair.

Mad for it? I was.
