Blue Planet II
8pm, BBC One
This magnificent series has enhanced the reputation of the BBC singlehandedly at a time when the Beeb’s other departments are under fire. Despite its shimmering, azure beauty, it has never pretended that the oceans are pacific. The series concludes on an ecological note, showing albatrosses feeding on plastic and the effect of ocean noise on underwater creatures. However, it also reveals efforts to preserve endangered species, with the odd success story. David Stubbs
Britain’s Wildest Weather 2017 6.30pm, Channel 4
A title and a concept likely to provoke incredulous guffaws around a world widely baffled by Britain’s obsession with its generally clement climate. Nevertheless, the course of any given year furnishes just-about-sufficiently picturesque storms, floods and so forth to pad out a vaguely diverting slab of festive television, and this is that. Expect a great deal of phone-shot footage of teetering trees and flooded drains. Andrew Mueller
Attenborough and the Giant Elephant
9pm, BBC One
Jumbo was probably the world’s first celebrity animal, a gargantuan African elephant born in Sudan and then brought to Paris, London and the United States in the mid-1800s. Such was his fame that he was said to have inspired the story of Dumbo, but his life was a troubled one. David Attenborough visits New York, where his remains are kept, and meets scientists hoping to learn more about his astonishing story. Ben Arnold
I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!
9pm, ITV
As the sun sets over the Australian jungle and the lesser-spotted D-listers make one last attempt to up their fame quota, the 17th series draws to a close. It’s been a good one, with plenty of character including Made in Chelsea’s Toff, footballer’s wife Rebekah Vardy and boxer Amir Khan. The audience will crown a King or Queen of the Jungle and then everyone will savour the sweetest glass of champagne of their lives in a luxury hotel. Hannah Verdier
Leonora Carrington: The Lost Surrealist
9pm, BBC Four
Leonora Carrington’s dreamlike, pale floating figures offer an accessible entry point to surrealist painting. This film both honours those creations and recounts the life of their maker. Once a lover of Max Ernst, Carrington later suffered in a Spanish asylum, which profoundly affected her. Talking heads and archival audio interviews with the artist animate work that retained childish qualities while touched with horror. John Robinson
Babylon Berlin
9pm, Sky Atlantic
Back to a febrile world where Nazism is about to take hold in Germany, and dogged Rath’s investigations lead him into ever-more dangerous territory – some of it in Russia. So it is that, in the first instalment of tonight’s triple bill, the detective finds himself on The Most Terrifying Flight Ever as he seeks to gain photographic evidence of a Soviet-sanctioned, Treaty of Versailles-busting German military presence at an airbase south of Moscow. Tense and atmospheric. Jonathan Wright
China’s Wild Side
8pm, Nat Geo Wild
China’s Yunnan province contains one of the youngest mountain ranges on Earth, an isolated environment rich in natural resources. The snowy peaks and tropical rainforests provide an ideal habitat for some of the rarest creatures on the planet, from snub-nosed monkeys to China’s few surviving elephants. The dedication of rangers helping wildlife fight for survival provides a charming insight into this outpost of the natural world. Mark Gibbings-Jones
TV films

A usually serene George Clooney is drowning in troubles. He’s a lawyer and patriarch of a leading family in Hawaii, and when his wife suffers a speedboat accident, he has to deal with precocious daughters, greedy relations, his responsibility to the islands and, not least, the revelation that his wife was cheating on him. Paul Howlett
Jo Nesbø’s Headhunters, (Morten Tyldum, 2011), 1.05am, BBC Two

He has to man up considerably, though, when his path crosses that of the implacably evil Greve (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau) in a superbly gripping, violent Scandi-thriller. Paul Howlett
