Sunday rainfall could hit 70mm in the Hunter

PARTS of the Hunter are forecast to see more than 50 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday as a line of storms moves through the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology has already seen significant downpours in Newcastle, with Merewether recording more than 13 millimetres of rain in just two hours, while Adamstown recorded 14 millimetres and in Lake Macquarie the suburb of Eleebana surpassed 20 millimetres.

"The forecast outlook for rainfall rates on Sunday will trend upwards," bureau forecaster Jordan Notara said.

"There is a line of storms tracking along this southerly change producing heavy rainfall rates. The Central Coast has already seen 40 millimetres plus in the last few hours.

"We can expect 30 to 50 millimetres by the end of the day in the Lower Hunter and in the Upper Hunter it will be more like 40 to 70 millimetres. It will be a case of where these storms align and where they occur in succession."

It is a big change from Saturday's high temperatures which surpassed 30 degrees Celsius in many parts of Newcastle and the Hunter. Residents can expect a cooler week with temperatures expected to sit around the mid 20s and some showers to stick around through to Friday.
