Sunday Mail Sports Awards: Tennis star Gordon could ace a gong

The very best of Scottish sport will again be recognised at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards in December — and Helensburgh tennis ace Gordon Reid could be in line for an award after a fine year.

Reid, who is one of Great Britain’s most successful wheelchair tennis players, enjoyed another fantastic year winning several tour titles and reaching two Grand Slam finals.

The 27-year-old might have missed out in the wheelchair men’s singles at the French Open and the wheelchair men’s doubles at Wimbledon but he still remains in the world’s top 10 in both the singles and doubles.

It would have been a fourth successive doubles title at Wimbledon but, despite that defeat, he heads into the US Open as reigning wheelchair doubles champion, where he will again be one of the favourites to take the title.

All in all, it has been another impressive year for the Helensburgh star who started playing tennis at the age of six, alongside his two brothers and sister at Helensburgh Lawn Tennis Club. He first began playing wheelchair tennis in 2005, when he was introduced to the sport at Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

So after yet another impressive 12 months on the tour, Reid is likely to among those who could win a gong at this year’s Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards.

Now in its 13th year, the annual event which is sponsored by sportscotland — the national agency for sport — celebrates excellence throughout Scottish sport by awarding our sportsmen, women, teams and volunteers for their outstanding achievements in 2019.

Chair of sportscotland, Mel Young, said: "It has been another fantastic year for sport in Scotland. Scottish athletes continue to shine on the world stage and there is terrific work being done by the sporting community across the country to increase the opportunities for as many people as possible to take part in sport.

"It is wonderful to have another chance to recognise such dedicated and hard-working people alongside Scotland’s elite athletes."
