Sunday Mail Sports Awards: St Mark's put PE at the heart of school life

The very best of Scottish sport will again be recognised at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards in December, and Rutherglen’s St Mark’s Primary School could be in the running for yet another award.

Last year St Mark’s picked up a gold award as part of the sportscotland School Sport Awards programme for putting sport at the very centre of school life and for innovation and achievement in delivering sport.

It was one of 673 schools across the country to secure a school sport award – that is a six per cent increase on 2016/2017, meaning that more Scottish schools than ever are putting sport at the heart of their school ethos.

Funded by the National Lottery, the sportscotland School Sport Award is a national initiative designed to encourage schools to continuously improve extra-curricular sport.

It puts young people at the forefront of decision making and planning of physical education and school sport while increasing opportunities for pupils to take part.

And nowhere is that more evident than at St Mark’s, where pupils play a lead role in planning and delivering sport sessions in the school.

Now in its 13th year, the annual event which is sponsored by sportscotland – the national agency for sport – celebrates excellence throughout Scottish sport by awarding our sportsmen, women, teams and volunteers for their outstanding achievements in 2019.

Chief executive of sportscotland, Stewart Harris, said: "It has been another fantastic year for sport in Scotland.

2Scottish athletes continue to shine on the world stage and there is terrific work being done by the sporting community across the country to increase the opportunities for as many people as possible to take part in sport.

"It is wonderful to have another chance to recognise such dedicated and hard-working people alongside Scotland’s elite athletes."
