Sunday Mail Sports Awards: Jemma is in the running for top prize

The very best of Scottish sport will again be recognised at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland

Scottish Sports Awards in December, and athletics star Jemma Reekie could be in the running for her efforts on the track over the past 12 months.

Fresh from representing Great Britain at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin last year, the Kilbarchan AC runner completed an historic double at the European Under-23 Championships when she won gold in both the 800m and 1500m events.

The 20-year-old won the Young Sports Personality of the Year title at 2017 Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards after a stunning breakout on the international scene and will again be one of the favourites.

Speaking after her double gold at the European Under-23 Championships Reekie said: “I don’t think it has hit me yet. I am really tired, my legs are sore and the girls did not make that easy for me, both days, but I am really pleased.

“I just wanted it so bad, I know I said coming here that I would be happy with two medals but there was only one colour I wanted in both and I am really pleased I got it right.

“It has been amazing here, an amazing experience and an amazing team. I can’t thank British Athletics enough for all their support, not just here, but throughout the year so far.

“Yesterday I had to try and stay calm (on the podium) and not get too excited but now I can celebrate and I can’t wait to go home and see my family.”

Now in its 13th year, the annual event which is sponsored byÂsportscotland – the national agency for sport – celebrates excellence throughout Scottish sport by awarding our sportsmen, women, teams and volunteers for their outstanding achievements in 2019.

And Jemma certainly fits into that category, having continued her meteoric rise as one of Britain’s best young athletes.

Chair of sportscotland, Mel Young, said: “It has been another fantastic year for sport in Scotland.

Scottish athletes continue to shine on the world stage and there is terrific work being done by the sporting community across the country to increase the opportunities for as many people as possible to take part in sport.

“It is wonderful to have another chance to recognise such dedicated and hard-working people alongside Scotland’s elite athletes.”
