Sunday gossip: Rafa Benitez's exit puts off French consortium eyeing takeover as ex-Premier League star urges boycott

Rafa Benitez's exit from Newcastle United could have cost the club a new owner - according to reports in the Sunday papers.

The Sun are claiming that a French consortium have cooled their interest in buying the club.

There is a suggestion the group were in the early stages of the process but are now having "second thoughts" after Benitez left the club last week.

Elsewhere in the Sunday papers Mirror columnist Stan Collymore has urged Toon fans to boycott games.

The former Liverpool and Nottingham Forest striker said : "Newcastle’s supporters really want to kick Ashley out of St James’ Park then they have got to get organised – and they must get militant.

"I’m not talking about physical threats. The Geordies have to hit Ashley hard in the only place he feels pain – in the pocket.

"That means costing him money and forcing him to lose so much face in the world of business that he is left with no option but to sell up.

"They must boycott the club they love."

Meanwhile the Star on Sunday have claimed that Sean Longstaff is "bitterly upset" at Benitez's departure and could leave the club.
